3 Tips to Striking Work-Life Balance

The to do lists seem to never end. "I need to do this. I've got to do that. They're depending on me to fulfill this." BLAH BLAH BLAH 

The reality is, life is happening all around us and responsibilities come with the package. In no way am I trying to deny the facts of life. It's the balance of knowing what and how to prioritize that seems to leave many of us dumbfounded. And in trying to strike that balance, it seems many of us are that waiter banging the pitcher against the glass trying to refill everyone else's cup! 

As I get older, I realize that I'm no good to others if I'm not taking care of myself. 

So how exactly can we find the balance between our professional lives and our personal ones? 

1. Unplug 
- I truly believe in an age where we are drowning in information and communication, it's important to unplug regularly and just BE. If possible, make a schedule for yourself. Perhaps you won't scroll social media or reply to work emails after 9pm. Or maybe you'll make it a goal to turn your phone on silent and just enjoy doing something YOU LOVE twice a week for an hour or so. I've done this and it is a GREAT way to regroup and realign myself. Go ahead and build downtime into your schedule...you deserve it!  

2. Prioritize people and activities 
- The irony of this is the original word "priority" was never plural. That's a newer concept. But for the sake of relevance, think about the people and activities that are TRULY important to you. Is it exercise? Listening to music? A good read? Time with loved ones? Prayer? These will be different for everyone and as you identify a few, you'll be able to devote quality time to those things. 

As your priorities become clear, don't feel bad that some things didn't make this list. Identifying what's important will help you set clear boundaries in what you can and cannot do. 

3. Swerve the Guilt 
- The reality is we can't give 100% to everything or everyone at once. It's OK if you have to decline a few invites or aren't available to add something else to your plate. You're human. And like I shared earlier, you're no good to anyone else if you aren't taking care of self.

  1. This is a wonderful post and a great reminder - I completely agree, Jenn!
    I've found that since I've started blogging social media has changed my views and mindset and greatly impacts my mood throughout the day... For better or for worse, it seems! Some days interacting on Instagram or Twitter is like a chore - and seeing all the negative and criticism that floats around the world just gets me down - while other days being able to share and interact with everyone on Bookstagram makes my day! Either way, unplugging is the best route and really does help maintain that healthy balance. And as ridiculous as it sounds it's nice to be fully alone every once in a while - silence without even the vibrate of a notification that has you jumping to check what you've missed.
    One of my "unplug" methods has been to ignore (almost all) social media in the mornings and instead write about my dreams or do some daily drawing! I was inspired when I decided to purchase Danny Gregory's Art Before Breakfast, and I've had Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert on my shelf for ages, and both of them say that to live creatively and freely you need to create something every day. Doing a drawing a day, or adding to one every day, made an almost immediate change to how I feel for the rest of the day. Knowing that I was creating something for myself and getting back into the creativity I had been missing for so long..!

    1. I completely agree with you in regards to social media. It can be either really great content or things that send your day going south :-/ I looooove the writing/drawing in the mornings!   2. Social media has definitely been a blessing and a curse. Some people post really triggering things, and sometimes, it feels like I am being bombarded with negativity. I had to unfollow and disconnect from folks. I have mental illnesses, and I am trying to stay steady. I'm grateful that you took the time to share such a heartfelt call to prioritize our values. So clever, and so wise.

  3. Great tips! It isn't work, but study, in my case and I self imposed the rule to not pick up university books after 7pm, this way I have to time block my time to study and it forces me to stay more focused. It's important to take some me-time at the end of the day in my opinion. :)
